Hormonal Prostaglandin F2? Mediates Behavioral Responsiveness to a Species-Specific Multi-component Male Hormonal Sex Pheromone in a Female Fish

چکیده

Synopsis Although hormonally-derived female sex pheromones have been well described in approximately a dozen species of teleost fish, only few male characterized and the neuroendocrine underpinnings behavioral responsiveness to them is not understood. Herein, we describe study that addresses this question using goldfish, Carassius auratus, an important model how hormones drive behavior egg-laying fishes. Our had four components. First, examined goldfish found when injected with prostaglandin F2? (PGF2?), treatment drives sexual receptivity, they became strongly uniquely attracted odor conspecific mature males, while non-PGF2?-treated did discern males from females. Next, complexity specificity pheromone by examining PGF2?-treated females either conspecifics or common carp odor, as their nonpolar polar fractions. We was more attractive than carp, its activity attributable both fractions later conveying information on species-identity. Third, hypothesized androstenedione (AD), 19-carbon steroid produced all fish might be fraction tested whether were AD alone part mixture water. inactive own, it highly added previously unattractive Lastly, test nonhormonal determine species-specificity, water three made attractive, effects other holding small. conclude circulating PGF2? at time ovulation induces sensitivity comprised body metabolites. Because commonly mediates fishes, universally fishes precursor testosterone, suggest these two may similar roles mediating male–female communication many fish.

Hormonal sex reversal in a female.

The terms pseudo-hermaphroditism and hermaphroditism have been used in different senses by various authors and for this reason they were discarded by Wilkins (1950). He describes as 'intersexes' (hermaphrodites) those cases in which the sexual dimorphism is not due to a demonstrable endocrine abnormality, and as cases of 'sex reversal' those in which there is an endocrine abnormality. Hormonal ...

Female marmosets' behavioral and hormonal responses to unfamiliar intruders.

The endocrine control mechanisms for female mammalian aggression have been largely unstudied. Although it has been proposed that androgens may modulate female aggressive behavior in a similar manner to males, very little conclusive evidence exists. Previous work in male marmosets found that post-encounter increases in testosterone (T) were dependent on the intensity of aggression displayed duri...

Hormonal Modulation of Pheromone Detection Enhances Male Courtship Success

During the lifespans of most animals, reproductive maturity and mating activity are highly coordinated. In Drosophila melanogaster, for instance, male fertility increases with age, and older males are known to have a copulation advantage over young ones. The molecular and neural basis of this age-related disparity in mating behavior is unknown. Here, we show that the Or47b odorant receptor is r...

A hormonal component in central vestibular compensation.

In developing clawed toads Xenopus laevis, the compensation mechanism of behavioural defects caused by unilateral labyrinthectomy consists of two components, a vestibular one and a hormonal one. Thyroxine accelerates this compensation.

The microstructure of white matter in male to female transsexuals before cross-sex hormonal treatment. A DTI study.

BACKGROUND Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) has been shown to be sensitive in detecting white matter differences between sexes. Before cross-sex hormone treatment female to male transsexuals (FtM) differ from females but not from males in several brain fibers. The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether white matter patterns in male to female (MtF) transsexuals before commencing cross-sex...
